Breaking the Silence Around Biological Diversity
Intersex peoplethose born with natural variations in sex characteristicshave existed in every culture and era, yet their stories are often erased. Intersex is not an anomaly; its biological diversity. According to the United Nations Free & Equal campaign, up to 1.7% of people are born with intersex traits, roughly the same proportion as redheads. However, many still undergo nonconsensual surgeries as infants to conform to binary expectations of male or female.
Organizations such as InterACT Advocates call for the immediate end of medically unnecessary interventions, framing them as human rights violations. Medical journals like JAMA increasingly recognize the need for autonomy and informed consent in intersex care. Awareness campaigns highlight that intersex individuals dont need to be fixedthey need to be accepted.
To embrace intersex realities is to expand our understanding of humanity. Nature is not binaryits beautifully varied. When we honor intersex lives, we honor the full spectrum of human possibility. SOURCE: sexnews.eu
