Sarah Shahi is the actress on everyone’s lips at the minute, courtesy of her steamy leading role in Netflix’s latest show Sex/Life. If you haven’t heard of her before, you might be wondering where on earth she’s come from, or, where you might recognise her from. As it turns out, she’s featured in quite a few hit shows throughout her career but is only now, at 41-years old, taking the spotlight. Below, everything you need to know about the talented actress from early life, to career and relationship history.

Sarah Shahi Early Life

Aahoo Jahansouzshahi was born in 1980 in Texas. Her father was from Iran, while her mother was Iranian-Spanish and born in Spain. Sarah has an older brother named Cyrus and an older sister Samantha.
The Iranian American grew up speaking Farsi in addition to English, making the decision to change her name to Sarah in the second grade, after experiencing teasing for her birth name.
Her parents made the decision to enter her in beauty pageants from the age of 8, with her going on to win the Miss Fort Worth pageant in 1997. She was the captain of the volleyball and basketball teams in high school, and majored in English and theatre during university.
With aspiring dreams to be an actress, she joined the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders from 1999-2000 and featured on the cover of the squad’s calendar.
While working as an extra on Dr T And The Women in Texas, she met director Robert Altman. He suggested she move to Hollywood to pursue acting as a career, which prompted her subsequent move to Los Angeles.

Sarah Shahi Career

Once she landed in the big city, Sarah scored a number of supporting roles in shows like City Guys, Spin City and Boston Public. From 2001-2002, she played the role of Jenny in the TV series Alias for seven episodes. She also made guest appearances in other well-known shows including Dawson’s Creek, Supernatural, Reba, ER and Frasier.
In 2003, her film career got its start with her first credited role as Erica in Old School. Then, in 2005 she snagged the role of Carmen in The L Word which is probably one of her best-known roles. She signed a two-year contract, and wrapped filming in 2007.
From 2006-2009, she starred in Life alongside Damian Lewis as a homicide detective. She then landed the lead role as a legal mediator in Fairly Legal which ran for two seasons.
Sarah’s most recent work has seen her hit our screens on the Netflix show Sex/Life. Here, she stars as Billie, a restless suburban wife and mother who can’t stop fantasising about a previous lover. Following this, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery which threatens to upend her and her family’s entire life.

Sarah Shahi Relationship History

In 2004, Shahi met actor Steve Howey when she guest-starred on an episode of his show, Reba. They announced their engagement in 2007, and tied the knot on February 7, 2009 in Las Vegas. On July 8, 2009 the actress delivered their first child during an at-home water birth. They had a baby boy, named William Wolf who is now aged 10. In 2015, Shahi gave birth to twins Violet and Knox, now aged 6.
In May last year, Shahi filed for divorce from Howy, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. This was just before she began filming Sex/Life in Canada. Their divorce was finalised on January 29, 2021.
It was during filming for the new Netflix show that the actress met Australian actor, Adam Demos. The pair fell in love, going Instagram official in December 2020, and are still going strong today.
“Not exactly sure how two people on opposite sides of the world could have more in common, were meant to meet, were meant to be together. But I do know I met my soulmate. I do know I found my forever. I do know I’ve never loved deeper, harder, more ferociously. I do know I’m overly grateful for him. I do know I’ve loved him for a thousand lifetimes before and will love him for a thousand lifetimes more. Happy birthday my baby ❤️” Shahi wrote in a recent Instagram post to Demos.
